Activity Three:
Exploration: Comparing the Sizes of the Objects Measured

Grade Level Content: K-3
Processes: Observing, Communicating,
Comparing, Organizing
Developmental Stages: Sensory Motor, Pre-Conceptual, Intuitive,
Concrete-Operational
Compare the measurements and sizes of the classroom objects including the globe (scale model) and the large printouts of the planets' images using different units of measurement:

Compare the Earth's size relative to another planet:

Mercury Jupiter Neptune
Venus Saturn Pluto
Mars Uranus Solar System

More images and information can be found on-line at:

Link to the available sites to identify and compare the Earth to other planets to decide which is larger, smaller and (almost) the same size as the Earth.

  • Which is larger?
  • Which is smaller?
  • Which are the same size?
  • Line them up from smaller to larger.
  • Line them up from larger to smaller.
Print the images, cut them out to feel the circumferences, and sort larger from smaller on the activity sheet.
