The Fundamentals

Instantaneous Velocity

The term average velocity refers to a particular time interval. If this time interval is very long, the motion of the luge may change appreciably during the interval. A shorter time interval, and smaller displacement, will give us a value for the average velocity that more accurately represents the luge motion. In the limit of a very short time interval (actually, in the limit as this interval goes to zero), the ratio of displacement to time interval is called the instantaneous velocity, or simply velocity.

The fastest recorded speed of a slider is 85.5 mph!
