Atmospheric Seeing Team
Observatories
are located in places where the atmosphere is very stable. Your team
needs to create digital movies from "test observations" to assess the quality
of the seeing at various locations. This team will download telescope
images made at each location and use NIH_Image (Mac),
ImagePC (PC) to create digital movies
of star images to determine the degree of "star twinkle" at each site.
The less "twinkle" or "scintilation" -- the better for long exposure photographs
of dim/faint stars.
Technical Instructions:
Your first task is to create
digital movies from which you will analyze the seeing conditions (atmospheric
turbulence) at each location. You should do this by making animated GIF
movies by stacking TIF images with NIH_Image
for MACs or Image_PC. (Off-site
instructions for using these image processing programs are available
.)
