This course will familiarize us with Native American and First Nations literature and its relation to the American and Canadian West. Supplemental readings from classic American literature, historical non-fiction, and film will be used to challenge or reflect upon what we mean when we refer to the “West,” both as a place or an evolving ideal. We will seek to retrace the creation of the Western mythos while placing Indigenous perspectives and literature at the center of our discussions. This juxtaposition will highlight the intersections of an Othering gaze and an internal gaze, ancient myths and modern myths, a storied place and a storied homeland.

Please note that syllabus is tentative and subject to changes before course begins.
