Course Description: We will discuss the lives and musical contributions of Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahsm and the Beatles, as well as their impact on society and culture in general. Musical selections will include Bach's Goldberg Variations, the Mass in B Minor, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the Brahms Requiem, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band! Dr. Lee will demonstrate musical examples on the piano, and will present multi-media lectures, including PowerPoint notes, DVD's, and significant audio recordings of the works to be discussed. Class format: Lecture, minimal reading

Instructor(s): Ilse-Mari Lee, EdD. Ilse-Mari Lee was born in South Africa. She joined MSU's music department in the fall of 1989. Active as a concert cellist and composer, she premiered her cello concerto "Mandela" with the Billings Symphony in 2002. Dr. Lee founded the MSU Cello Ensemble in 1998, and subsequently toured throughout the Northwest, as well as to Europe and China. She received the President's Excellence in Teaching Award, and currently serves as Assistant Director of the University Honors Program.
