Course Description: You are invited to a very special Wonderlust Side Trip given in conjunction with the Intermountain Opera Association. This year's opera is the perennial favorite Bizet's "Carmen." Several of the principal singers will perform and discuss their roles. The director and conductor will present their views on the opera, its performance and staging. This will be a great opportunity to get "behind the scenes" information about this year's opera.
Principals in the opera who may attend are:
Audrey Babcock will be singing Carmen. She has sung this role with the New York City Opera and performed for the Seattle Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Santa Fe opera.
Scott Piper will sing Don Jose. Scott has performed this role with the New York City Opera and recently sang Alfredo in the new DVD of Franco Zeffirelli's production of La Traviata conducted by Placido Domingo. Scott has previously appeared with the Seattle Opera and with the IOA where he sang Des Grieux in Manon Lescaut in 2006.
Carlos Archuleta will make his first appearance with the IOA singing Escamillo. He has recently performed with the National Opera, Minnesota and San Antonio Operas.
Jennifer Welch-Babidge will return to the IOA to perform Micaela. She was Intermountain Opera's Lucia when they presented "Lucia di Lammermoor."
Julian Dawson the conductor will be returning for his 4th IOA program. Julian was trained in Scotland and England. He recently spent five summers as conductor for the Oberlin in Italy opera program. He conducted the Magic Flute last year for the IOA. Steven Daigle will be the stage director and in his first appearance with the IOA. He is currently at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York and artistic director of the Eastman Opera program.
Meeting Place and Times: Pilgrim Congregational Church, 3-5 p.m.
Instructor(s): Linda Curtis. Curtis is Artistic Director and has been involved with the IOA since its inception in 1979. As a soprano she performed leading roles in productions of La Traviata, the Barber of Seville, La Boheme. She was the vocal advisor to Pablo Elvira the original artistic director until he retired in 1997 when Linda became the artistic director for the IOA. She is responsible for obtaining the singers, director and conductor. Margaret Cone. Cone is Production Coordinator and has been with IOA since 1987. She manages the staging of the performance keeping everything organized and on time behind the scenes.
