Course Description: The 2008 Presidential election will soon be upon us. This course will devote the three weeks before Election Day (Nov. 4) to looking at issues such as the nomination, the ways in which money rules, how candidates keep their base, the role of campaign advertising and the news media filter, and the Electoral College math as used by the candidates. The final and fourth session, held after the election, will be devoted to looking at the outcome, i.e., the accuracy of pre-election polls, demography of the voters, issues that mattered, etc.
Meeting Place and Times: Four sessions: Mondays, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, 20 and 27 and Nov. 10 (no class on Nov. 3). All sessions take place at the Museum of the Rockies.
Instructor(s): Jerry Calvert, PhD. Jerry Calvert is a Professor of Political Science, semi-retired. He has published books, book chapters, academic articles, conference papers, and expert commentary for a variety of media including the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, NPR and MSNBC.
Prerequisites: No prior knowledge is required. There will be a moderate amount of material to read – much of it can be accessed via the Internet.
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per week. If you are unfamiliar with this field of study and/or method of delivery, you may require more time.
