Course Description: Chrysti will discuss the forgotten sources of some of our most rank and file expressions such as “In like Flynn,” “At one fell swoop” and “Lick into shape.”
Meeting Place and Times: Tuesday, Sept. 23, 3-5 p.m., Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2118 South 3rd Ave.
Instructor(s): Chrysti Smith, PhD. Chrysti M. Smith, a native Montanan, was born and raised in Poplar. She became interested in words as a teenager, when lack of material to read while working in rural Montana compelled her to browse dictionaries. Smith has since become a dictionary collector, amassing a library of hundreds of word-related books. “Dictionaries,” says Smith, “are alphabetized story books. A patient look at a dictionary reveals tales as riveting as any classic drama.”
As a student of anthropology at MSU-Bozeman in the early 1990s, Smith initiated a radio series at KGLT-FM, the campus radio station. What began as a student project became “Chrysti the Wordsmith,” a syndicated two-minute radio series on the histories of words and phrases.
