Course Description: The American Civil War is unquestionably the most fascinating event in American history. More histories and novels have been written about the war than any other event. This is not only because it provides a remarkable setting for historical analysis and historical fiction, but because the conflict has crucial significance to all of American history—even to this day. Yet despite all the attention given to the Civil War, historians are still almost as far away from agreement about it as were analysts over 140 years ago.
Class format: This is a lecture and discussion based course. A book, Confederates in the Attic, by Tony Horwitz, plus supplementary materials furnished by the instructor, provide background for the six class units.
Meeting Place and Times: Thursdays, 2:30-4:30 PM, 6 sessions beginning January 29 to March 5. Community Room, First Securith Bank, South 19th Street
Instructor(s): Jeff Safford , PhD. Jeff Safford is Emeritus Professor of History, Montana State University. He holds a Rutgers University doctorate in American History. His most recent book, The Mechanics of Optimism, examines Montana during and directly after the American Civil War.
