Course Description: Join Valerie Hemingway on an adventurous journey as she relates her encounter with Ernest Hemingway as a teenage journalist. Learn about the two years she spent living with the Hemingways in Cuba and traveling with them through France and Spain when she worked as Hemingway’s secretary during the final years of his life. The travelogue continues to New York City where Valerie worked for the Hemingway Literary Estate. Valerie will also describe the trials and joys of writing and publishing her successful memoir, Running with the Bulls (Ballantine Books 2005), and give a few hints to aid you in producing your own life story. Instructor(s): Valerie Hemingway. Valerie Hemingway, a native of Ireland, moved to Spain at 18. As a journalist, she interviewed Ernest Hemingway. Two months later, he hired her as his secretary, a job that took her to Spain, France and Cuba. After Hemingway’s death, Valerie arranged and catalogued the Hemingway papers for presentation to Boston’s Kennedy Library. In 1980 Valerie and her husband–Hemingway’s youngest son, Gregory–and their four children moved to Bozeman to enjoy the outdoor sporting life. In 2004 Valerie’s memoir, Running with the Bulls: My Life with the Hemingways, was published by Ballantine Books. Valerie recently performed at the Edinburgh Festival in Hemingway’s Havana alongside a completely Cuban cast, including members of the original Buena Vista Social Club. Represented internationally by The American Program Bureau, Valerie lectures throughout the U.S. and abroad.
