Preview the Intermountian Opera Association's Fall Opera: The Ballad of Baby Doe by Douglas Moore

Course Description:
Julian Dawson, the IOA conductor, and local singers will preview the libretto and sing excerpts from the opera. This opera brings to the stage an unforgettable love story involving a romantic triangle and the politics of mining in the Rocky Mountains.
Linda Curtis, Artistic Director, will discuss the complex process of selecting and bringing together all the elements of the performance (singers, chorus, orchestra, stage sets, director and conductor) to the Willson Stage.

The opera will be presented on Oct. 9 and 11 at the Willson Auditorium.

Instructor(s): Julian Dawson. Dawson will be the conductor for the performance of the Magic Flute. He is currently the conductor of the De Paul University Opera and was formerly Director of Orchestras and Opera for Illinois State University for 26 years. Maestro Dawson has recently spent five summers as Conductor of the Oberlin in Italy opera program in Urbania, Italy. He conducted last fall’s performance of the Mikado for the Intermountain Opera Association.

Linda Curtis. Curtis is Artistic Director and has been involved with the IOA since its inception in 1979. As a soprano she performed leading roles in productions of La Traviata, the Barber of Seville, La Boheme. She was the vocal advisor to Pablo Elvira the original artistic director until he retired in 1997 when Linda became the artistic director for the IOA. She is responsible for obtaining the singers, director and conductor.
