Course Description: Session 1: Monday, Oct. 12, 3-5 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church
This class will provide a historical review of the role of photography in documenting and reporting war. From the Crimean War in the 1850s to today’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, photography has played a significant part in portraying the realities of war.
Session 2 - Monday, Oct. 26, 3-5 p.m. at the Museum of the Rockies
This class will meet in the museum’s exhibition hall for a presentation on the exhibit “Memories of World War II: Photographs from the Archives of the Associated Press.” The exhibition features 126 photographs from World War II covering Europe and the Pacific. The class will discuss how photographs have influenced what we know about the people and events of the war.

Instructor(s): Steve Jackson. Jackson is Associate Curator of Art and Photography at the Museum of the Rockies, Montana State University. He has a Masters of Fine Art in photography and printmaking from the University of Florida and has over 19 years experience as a museum curator. His research areas include early Yellowstone National Park photographic history, historic and contemporary landscape photography of the Northern Rockies region, the preservation and management of photographic collections, and the digitization and database access of museum collections. Steve also teaches two courses on the history of photography and a class on experimental photography as an adjunct instructor with the Media and Theater Arts department at MSU.
