The course focuses on the economic, social and environmental issues centered around recent energy exploration and development in the Bakken Formation of Montana and North Dakota. It will explore multiple aspects: is it a benefit to the nation’s energy policy and Montana’s economy? How can we factor in the environmental and societal issues that have arisen? The class will also cover the geology of eastern Montana, the nature of oil and gas deposits, the technology of exploration and development of oil fields, and socio-economic impacts of the oil boom in eastern Montana.
