Course Description: This course introduces prospective school library media specialists to the current trends, practices, issues, and technological tools relevant to mastering and providing reference and information services. Students will gain hands-on experience using Web-based tools which will help them eventually in delivering reference services to their school community. Students will become familiar with popular search engines and subject directories and will learn techniques to use each one appropriately and efficiently. The course is part of the School Library Media certification program at Montana State University.
Meeting Place and Times: Participants login to the course at a time of day that best fits their schedule. It is necessary to connect at least 4 - 6 times per week to stay current and successfully complete this 3 credit course.
Instructor(s): Mary Anne Hansen. Hansen is an Associate Professor and Reference Librarian at the Montana State University Libraries. She also serves as Distance Education Coordinator for the MSU Libraries. Hansen earned her Master of Library Science in 1995 through the University of Arizona’s Distance Ed Program. She also has a M.Ed. (1993) and a B.A. in Modern Languages (1985) from Montana State University. Janis Bruwelheide, EdD. Prerequisites: Teacher Licensure; basic technology skills; graduate standing.
Target Audience: This course is required for those pursuing K-12 Library Media Certification. School library media specialists who want continuing education credit may also enroll if space permits. Enrollment is limited to 20 teachers.
Time Commitment: 8-10 hours per week. If you are unfamiliar with this field of study and/or method of delivery, you may require more time.

The cost of the course assumes that you are taking only online courses from Montana State University (MSU) and/or specially designated courses through MSU Extended University during the semester that the course is offered. If you are also taking regular face-to-face courses from Montana State University, other costs may apply. Montana State University charges a $3.25 per credit hour computer fee for this course. (The fee is $3.15 per credit hour during summer session 2009.) MSU also charges a $30 registration fee per student per semester.
