Course Description: This course is designed to meet licensure requirements in the areas of Curriculum Design, Pedagogy, and Assessment. It is designed to equip new teachers with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions to meet the teaching profession’s expectations in the area of planning and preparation of daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly curriculum. This course will provide the practical planning content that will then be mirrored in the first internship of the program sequence (EDCI 558).
Topics to be covered will include:
- Historical and contemporary curriculum standards
- National standards
- State and district standards
- Instructional objectives
- Varieties of assessment
- Writing effective and appropriate assessments
- Aligning assessments to professional standards and instructional objectives
- Theory and practice of instructional design
- Content, pedagogical content knowledge, and pedagogy
- Differentiated Instruction and Understanding by Design
Meeting Place and Times: Teachers login to the course at a time of day that best fits their schedule. It is necessary to connect at least 4 - 6 times per week spending 15 - 18 hours each week, either online or offline, working on course related assignments, to stay current and successfully complete this 3 credit graduate course.
Instructor(s): Lynn Kelting-Gibson, Ed.D. She teaches both for the alternative certification program, Northern Plains Transition to Teaching, and on campus at Montana State University. Her areas of interest and research are curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment and the integration of Indian Education for All.
Prerequisites: Students must be accepted into the Northern Plains Transition to Teaching Program.
Target Audience: Non-degree Teacher Licensure/Certification and Graduate students in the Northern Plains Transition to Teaching Program.
Time Commitment: 15-18 hours per week. If you are unfamiliar with this field of study and/or method of delivery, you may require more time.

The cost of the course assumes that you are taking only online courses from Montana State University (MSU) and/or specially designated courses through MSU Extended University during the semester that the course is offered. If you are also taking regular face-to-face courses from Montana State University, other costs may apply. Montana State University charges a $3.25 per credit hour computer fee for this course. (The fee is $3.15 per credit hour during summer session 2009.) MSU also charges a $30 registration fee per student per semester.
