Course Description: Health professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, etc) have an increasing expectation that applicants have participated in an informed decision making process when choosing a specific career within the health care delivery system. It is the goal of this course to provide students with the tools of professionalism and a mechanism to initiate clinical observation.
The course will formally include a one-hour per week didactic experience. The first 6 weeks of the semester will be dedicated to discussions of professionalism, HIPAA and hospital/clinic practices, medical ethics and a 3 week clinical problem based learning exercise. The following 6 weeks will include a didactic component and a clinical observation component. The didactic component will include on ongoing discussion of a medically related book chosen by the class (for example, one of the William T. Close or Abraham Verghese novels) and an exploration of clinical experiences of the week. In addition to the didactic component, students will be assigned 3-4 hour clinical observation opportunities for each of the six weeks.
Meeting Place and Times: Wilson Hall 1-147 Wednesday OR Friday 10 am to 10:50 am (first half of semester) 3 to 4 hours per week in community (second half of semester)
