Course Description: This course is designed to offer in-depth exploration of alcohol and drug studies. Students will integrate information learned from previous addictions courses with cutting edge research within the field of addictions as it pertains to a particular population or topic specific to addiction counseling.

Course Objectives
Students will:

  • Understands how to critically evaluate research relevant to the practice of addiction counseling (CACREP: Section III Addiction Counseling - I.1.).
  • Knows models of program evaluation for addiction counseling treatment and prevention programs (CACREP: Section III Addiction Counseling – I.2.).
  • Knows evidence-based treatments and basic strategies for evaluating counseling outcomes in addiction counseling (CACREP: Section III Addiction Counseling- I3.).
  • Applies relevant research findings to inform the practice of addiction counseling (CACREP: Section III Addiction Counseling – J.1.).
  • Develops measurable outcomes for addiction counseling programs, interventions, and treatments (CACREP: Section III Addiction Counseling – J.2.).
  • Analyzes and uses data to increase the effectiveness of addiction counseling

Meeting Place and Times: Teachers login to the course at a time of day that best fits their schedule. It is necessary to connect at least 4 - 6 times per week and spend 14 - 16 hours per week while the course is in session, either online or offline working on course related assignments, to stay current and successfully complete this 3 credit graduate course.

Instructor(s): Teresa Christensen, PhD. ., is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado and Virginia, and a LPC-Board Approved Supervisor in Louisiana. She is also a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor (RPT-S) who has counseled children, adolescents, and families in a variety of settings for over 16 years. She is currently an Associate Professor of Counseling, Chair of Counseling Children and Adolescent Post-Graduate Certificate program, and Faculty Advisor for the Rho Upsilon Chi chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, a national honorary society, at Regis University in Denver, CO. For the past 13 years, Teresa has served as a review team member for the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). In addition, Teresa has served on various executive committees for professional associations and editorial boards for professional journals related to counseling which currently include: the Association for Play Therapy (APT), the Colorado Association for Play Therapy (CAPT), the Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (ACES), and the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW). Teresa has received several research awards which most recently included the Best Group Research Article of the Year (2007) Award in an ACA journal granted by the Association for Specialists in Group Work.

Prerequisites: Be accepted into the Licensed Addiction Counseling Program.

Time Commitment: 14-16 hours per week. If you are unfamiliar with this field of study and/or method of delivery, you may require more time.

The cost of the course assumes that you are taking only online courses from Montana State University (MSU) and/or specially designated courses through MSU Extended University during the semester that the course is offered. If you are also taking regular face-to-face courses from Montana State University, other costs may apply.

Montana State University charges a $3.25 per credit hour computer fee for this course. (The fee is $3.15 per credit hour during summer session 2009.)

MSU also charges a $30 registration fee per student per semester. If you have not yet paid this fee, you may do so when you register for this course.
