A Student´s Quick Resource to Using WebCT at MSU
Commonly asked questions about accessing WebCT at MSU

What version of WebCT are we using at Montana State University?
We are using WebCT Campus Edition, version 4.1 (abbreviated WebCT CE 4.1).

How do I know if I am enrolled in a WebCT supplemented class? What is my WebCT ID?
Your instructor will inform you if you are enrolled in a course that is using WebCT as a web-based resource.

If you are in a course that is using WebCT, you need a WebCT ID and Password to access it.

  • Most regularly enrolled students will use their 8 digit Banner Student ID, without the minus sign, as their WebCT ID. Leading zeros are included in this ID. The assigned password will initially be this same 8 digit number. Students are welcome to change their password whenever they wish.
  • Students who did not enroll through the registrar (for example, those enrolled through Extended Studies) will be assigned WebCT ID´s based on other personal information. Your instructor will contact you with this information.

Note: It is critical if you are participating in an online course that you supply your instructor with your current email address and that you check that email regularly until you confirm access to your WebCT account.

I know I am in a WebCT supplemented class and I know my WebCT ID. How do I access the course?
1) Open a new browser window.
2) Go to the MSU WebCT home page at http://webct.montana.edu.
3) Click on the "Log in to" text, and in the login box that appears, enter your WebCT ID and Password. Note: The "Log in to" text does not appear to be a link (is not underlined) until you hover your mouse over the text.
4) If this is the first time that you have logged into WebCT you will be prompted to change your password. See Important information regarding the first time you log in to MSU's new WebCT Campus Edition for additional information.
5) If you successfully log in, you will be taken to the "myWebCT" page, which shows the WebCT courses that you are enrolled in, on the left side. You should look around this page and familiarize yourself with the links and tools available.

*There is a "Change Password" link near the upper right portion of the page. Please feel free to change your password to whatever is convenient and easy to remember.
Note: You cannot add or remove yourself from WebCT courses  - this function is reserved for your instructor.

How do I make sure my web browser will work properly with WebCT CE 4.1?

  • Browser Settings: To verify that WebCT CE 4.1 will work properly with your web browser you must go to to the WebCT browser tuneup page at http://www.webct.com/tuneup and follow the instructions on the page for adjusting your settings. (In a nutshell, your browser must be java enabled, and the cache settings should be set to update pages on every visit.)
  • PLEASE note that WebCT CE4.1 no longer supports several older browsers, in particular Netscape versions 4.7x to 4.8, 6.0 and 6.1, and Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and 5.5 SP1. You will need to use a newer version or different browser to access your WebCT course.
  • Note: Users of MSN Hotmail and AOL should open a new browser and enter the webct.montana.edu address manually to insure correct operation.
How do I navigate properly within my WebCT course?
  • Use the Course Menu, page links, and breadcrumbs within the WebCT page. Avoid using the Back and Forward buttons on your browser toolbar, as these may cause unpredictable results.
What should I do when I´m done using WebCT in a student lab or other public venue?
  • Click the Log Out link in the WebCT Title Banner. You will know you have successfully logged out of your account when you are returned to the WebCT Entry page.
