Update Users Restore OptionThe Update users restore option allows a "merge" to occur between users that are already in the course that is being restored into and users that are in the backup being used to perform the restore. The "merge" has a certain effect on the student and TA accounts as illustrated below. Example:The instructor/designer wants to take the backup from his or her practice course and restore it into his or her old course using the "Update users" restore option.
In the old course, students 01 thru 05 are in the student database.
In the old course, the TA accounts are students 20, 21, and 22.
In the practice course students 05-10 exist in the student database.
In the practice course, TA accounts are students 22, 23 and 24.
Note that there is an overlap in this example... in the "Manage Students" area, Student 05 appears in both courses and in the "Manage Teaching Assistants" area, Student 22 appears in both courses. Start the restore process by accessing "Course Functions" while on the "myWebCT" page of the instructor account.
When in the "Course Functions" area, select the backup to be used as the restore (in this case the "Practice Course" backup) and select the "Restore backup" hotlink button.
Direct the restore into the "Old Course" (red arrow). Select the "Update Users" restore option.
The "Restore Report" is an intermediary screen that describes what is occurring during the update. Reading the report indicates what will take place.
Select the "Continue" hotlink button.
Select "OK".
After the restore runs, select "Continue".
In the student database of the "Old course", students 06-10 are orphaned and denied access... the only way for them to become viable members of the class is to remove them and re-add them in.
In the TA database of the "Old course", students 23 and 24 are orphaned and denied access... the only way for them to become viable members of the class is to remove them and re-add them in.
