Calorie Values

Muscle work ultimately depends on energy supplied by consuming foods. Carbohydrate, protein, and fat from food are the source of the body's energy stores. As shown in this graph, one gram of fat contains more than twice the energy of either a gram of carbohydrate or protein. Although alcohol also contains energy (7 kcal/gram), alcohol is not used to fuel muscle contraction. Energy from alcohol metabolism is given off as heat.
