It is important to know that as the skater pushes against the ice, or applies a force to the ice, the ice applies a force back on the skater. This is called a ground reaction force (GRF), and is an example of Newton's 3rd law. Forces occur in pairs, equal in size but opposite in direction. It is this ground reaction force which makes the skater move forward.
