The Fundamentals

Average velocity

The faster the luge is moving, the farther it will travel in an interval of time. Dividing the displacement by the time interval for a particular pair of points on the track gives a quantity called the average velocity of the luge over that time interval.

We sometimes use the term speed rather than velocity. Is there any difference between these? In everyday language, no. However, in kinematics we use the term velocity to include information about the direction of the motion.

For each displacement that you found for the sequence of images above, calculate the average velocity. The units used for velocities are meters per second or m/s.
