The luge and bobsled track in the 1998 Olympics in Nagano is very unique. The architects and engineers wanted to minimize the environmental impact of placing a 1700m track into the foothills of Mount Iizuna. The architects designed the track to have two uphill segments to minimize tree and topsoil removal. The engineers designed a more efficient cooling system to minimize costs and leaks of hazardous refrigerants. The new system uses dehumidified air as a refrigerant to cool the track.
