Muscles used in Cross-country skiing

Many different muscles are used for cross country skiing. The muscles used depend on the skiing technique the skier is using.

The diagonal stride and the muscles used in the order of greatest use:

  • Sartorius
  • Rectus femoris
  • Triceps Brachii
  • Gastrocnemius
  • Biceps brachii

The double poling technique and the muscles used in the order of greatest use:

  • Pectoralis major
  • Abdominal muscles
  • Deltoid
  • Latissimus dorsi
  • Biceps brachii

The skating technique and the musclesused in the order of greatest use:

  • Gluteus maximus
  • Rectus femoris
  • Biceps femoris
  • Sartorius
  • Triceps brachii
  • Deltoid
