Workshop Description: Come to the Burns Technology Center and attend a one and a half day seminar for instructors who wish to develop a WebCT course to supplement their traditional face-to-face class.

  • Learn about MSU WebCT and how it can help invigorate your teaching.
  • Work and learn with fellow instructors who share the same goal.
  • Leave with an initial online supplement that can be used right away!

What is a hybrid course? Hybrid courses are courses that have both face-to-face and online components. There are generally two basic varieties in use today:

  • Participants meet face-to-face on a regular schedule, and content (such as syllabus, readings, grades, and other necessary materials) are available to students online.
  • Participants meet less often in person and all of the course materials and much of the interaction takes place online.

Who should attend?
Montana State University faculty (both tenure-track and adjunct) who wish to expand current teaching options. Individuals might include:

  • Instructors who are new to WebCT and want to create a hybrid course by adding an online supplement to augment their existing traditional face-to-face course.
  • Instructors who have an online component already established but wish to move content behind a gated resource (WebCT).
  • • Instructors or instructional staff who have used WebCT before but need structured time to revisit their WebCT skill set.

This learning opportunity is for all Montana State University instructors and/or instructional staff who want to develop a supplementary online course for their face-to-face class using WebCT.

The WebCT Hybrid session includes:

  • Brief overview/introduction to WebCT
  • Instructional Design best practices
  • Creating a plan for your course
  • Conversion of materials into electronic versions suitable for the web
  • Development of course basics:
    • Syllabus
    • Content Modules
    • Grade Book - includes releasing grades to students electronically
    • Communication Tools
  • Personal work time geared for course building/completion

Participants should be prepared to stay throughout all session times and bring materials to convert and upload into their WebCT course shell. Sessions will include discussion and hands-on periods of time to get the actual course built. Due diligence can potentially yield a complete supplementary WebCT course ready for the next semester that the face-to-face version of the course is offered! No fuss-no muss.

Prerequisites: MSU faculty or instructional staff who intend to use WebCT to support and supplement their teaching in future semesters.

What You Will Need to Bring: If you have already developed electronic copies of course material(s) bring all of it along on a CD or another type of media.

Bring a s much class info as you’d like to get uploaded to your course website:

  • Your course information should be divided into logical (daily, weekly, monthly or module driven) postings or information.
  • Bring as much content/informational documents as you can.
  • Note - formatting is not as important as content at this point.

*If you have paper copies or graphics that need conversion into web-ready material please consider attending the complimentary "Conversion Clinic" on Wednesday, May 10 (the day before the session officially begins) - this will assure that scheduled worktimes during the session will not be consumed by the need to convert documents - and you'll be able to spend your time planning and actually building your course!

Meeting Dates & Times:

  • Thursday, May 11, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm: Brief WebCT overview/intro; best practices, planning, direct instruction; supported work time with MSU WebCT staff on hand to assist.
  • Friday, May 12, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm: Work time; course reviews with participants and MSU WebCT staff. Lunch provided!
  • Note: Wednesday, May 10, 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm (optional): Complimentary "Conversion Clinic" workshop - MSU WebCT staff will be on hand to give you a jump on converting documents (paper, electronic, graphics) into web-ready electronic format for use in the WebCT course you create. Bonus!
